Botanical characteristic: A perennial herb, growing to a height of up to 150 cm. The stem is simple, straight, felted. The leaves are saw-toothed, grey-green, five-lobed at the base, three-lobed at the top. The flowers are five-numerous, pale, pale pink, growing in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a single-seeded drupe.

Distribution: It originates from the Mediterranean region. It grows in moist, warm meadows.
Drug: Althaeae radix, Althaeae folium
Harvesting method: Root harvesting takes place at the end of the second growing season and in the spring of the third growing season. The leaves are collected before flowering. The method of harvesting is by spading the roots and the panicle with the leaves with secateurs.
Drying: The roots are cleaned of dirt. They are cut lengthwise, can be strung on twine and dried naturally in a dark room. The leaves are dried naturally in the shade, in thin layers, in a ventilated room.
Active substances: The whole plant is very rich in mucilage, which can make up to 20 % of the dry weight of the root drug. In addition, the root contains pectin and starch. The plant also contains phenolic acids, tannins and flavonoids.
Uses: Hibiscus is successfully used for the therapy of dry and irritating cough. This plant has an anti-inflammatory effect and the mucilage from it has a protective function on the mucous membranes. That is why it is customary to gargle with hibiscus infusions for inflammations in the oral cavity and nasopharynx. The drug can also be used for mild inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines.
Traditional method of use in indications determined solely on the basis of long-term use:
– symptomatic treatment of oral or pharyngeal irritation with associated dry cough,
– relief of symptoms of mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
