Botanical characteristic: An annual climbing or climbing plant, with distinctive pubescence, branched tendrils. The leaves are petiolate, broadly ovate, five-lobed. Male flowers are in axillary umbellate clusters, female flowers occur singly, pedicels are 5-edged. The crown is 7 – 10 cm wide, deep yellow in colour. It flowers from June to September. The fruit is a large round to cylindrical berry, yellow or green in colour with flat white seeds.

Distribution: It comes from North America. It occurs worldwide in many varieties.

Harvesting method: Pumpkin seeds are harvested at maturity from July to September.

Drying: The seeds are dried naturally in the air in thin layers and in electric dryers.

Active substances: Pumpkin seeds contain fatty oil, a high proportion of phytosterols, especially delta-7-sterol. Vitamin E, essential amino acids, the amino acid cornbitin, trace elements such as selenium, manganese, copper and zinc are present.

Uses: Pumpkin seeds and the oil pressed from them are used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign enlargement of the prostate gland).

Traditional method of use in indications determined solely on the basis of long-term use:

  • symptomatic treatment of the urinary tract in benign prostatic hyperplasia or overactive bladder.
