Botanical characteristic: A perennial herb that grows to a height of 60 cm. The stem is erect, quadrangular, branched at the top. The leaves are ovate, opposite, entire. The reddish-pink flowers are clustered in a tufted surround. The whole plant is covered with glandular trichomes. The fruit is a small, dry, deciduous fruit from a two-seeded pistil which breaks into 4 one-seeded parts.

Distribution: It grows on dry sunny slopes, on logging sites, on the edges of forests.
Drug: Origani herba
Harvesting method: The stalk with leaves are collected from July to August, at the time of flowering. 20 cm long parts of the stem are cut with gardening shears or bevelled.
Drying: The stalk with leaves of oregano are drieds naturally in a thin layer in a dark ventilated room. It can be tied into bundles and hung loosely. It is dried artificially in a drying room where the temperature must not exceed 35 °C.
Active substances: Oregano contains a large amount of essential oil, which consists of substances such as carvacrol, pinene, cymene, myrcene and thymol. The plant contains flavonoids, tannins and rosmarinic acid.
Uses: The drug promotes appetite, acts against flatulence, stimulates the secretion of bile and also has an antispasmodic effect. In folk medicine, oregano is used for its weak euphoric and sedative effect.
Traditional method of use in indications determined solely on the basis of long-term use:
– symptomatic treatment of mild spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, bloating and flatulence,
– regeneration of irritated skin in the area of the nostrils.
