Botanical characteristic: Perennial, aromatic semi-evergreen, grows to a height of 50 – 80 cm. The stem is straight, branching at the top. The leaves are ovate, oblong, grey-green, oppositely arranged. The blue-purple flowers are arranged in simple panicles and form a rhizome. The fruit is a small, dry, deciduous fruit from a two-seeded pistil which breaks into 4 one-seeded parts.

Distribution: It grows by the roads, on the edge of forests, in forest clearings.
Drug: Salviae officinalis folium
Harvesting method: Medicinal sage leaves are collected during the flowering period, in dry weather, with gardening shears.
Drying: We dry the leaves naturally in a thin layer in the shade, in a ventilated room. Artificially in a dryer at a temperature of up to 40 °C.
Active substances: The whole plant contains a large amount of essential oil composed of a mixture of thujone, camphor, cineol, borneol, linalool and other terpenes. Other contents include tannins, bitter substances dominated by picrosalvin (= carnosol), flavonoids and triterpenes.
Uses: Sage preparations are used to gargle with inflammations of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and nasopharynx. It is taken internally to aid digestion, for feelings of bloating and excessive sweating. The whole plant is attributed with antimicrobial properties.
Traditional method of use in indications determined solely on the basis of long-term use:
– relief from mild dyspeptic complaints, heartburn, bloating,
– treatment of excessive sweating,
– symptomatic treatment of inflammations of the oral cavity and throat,
– symptomatic treatment of minor skin inflammations.
